A note on mental illness, as represented in creative arts
Guy de Maupassant's (fictional) story, “Le Horla”, has chilling parallels with Shwe Wutt Hmon's sister's attempt at suicide.
The two are more than a hundred years apart. One is in France and the other, Myanmar.
I read Maupassant's story in a 2009 book, “A Day in the Country and other stories”. Translated by David Coward, and published by Oxford University Press.
And I attended Shwe Wutt Hmon's and Kyi Kyi Thar's 2021 exhibition: “Noise and clouds and us”. Held at Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film, Singapore.
